Everything You Need to Know: The Ultimate Guide to Harveys
Hello, Harveys fam!
My name is Izzy and I’ve been a new member of the Harveys team since April of this year. I’m so excited to be reviving what I believe to be such a fun part of our community, our website journals!
A little background about myself – I’m a Journalism student with a passion for fashion and all things creative! Since joining the family, I’ve spent a lot of time learning the history and culture of Harveys, a journey that I’d love to take you all on with me. So, whether you’re a newbie, like me, or a longtime fan, here is a quick rundown of what makes Harveys the phenomenon it is today!
How It All Began
Back in 1997, the first Harveys seatbelt bag was created. While restoring their classic car, Dana Harvey had the idea to take the leftover seatbelt material and make a matching handbag for his wife, Melanie. The bag became a hit amongst friends and family, drawing the attention of vendors and businesses alike. From there, the rest is history! Over 25 years later, Harveys has continued to produce stellar-quality handbags, all made locally in Santa Ana.
Why Seatbelt?
It’s no secret that part of what makes Harveys so unique is the material for our bags – seatbelts! Now that you know how the original seatbelt bag came to be, you may be wondering what it is about this medium that has made us stick with it for all this time. One of the most impressive factors is the durability of seatbelts. This ensures that each bag remains usable for plenty of years, an investment that pays off! Seatbelts are also easily cleaned and wick away water, allowing you to trust your bag in any setting– rain or shine. Along with the resilience of the material, seatbelts allow colors to appear in their truest, brightest form. They also have a lustrous effect which, when combined with the beautiful colors, shines like a crown jewel! As well as being vegan and animal-friendly, (sometimes we even make products for our furry friends!) seatbelts remain a tried and true material for creating the perfect bag.
What is First Friday?
A staple in Harveys culture is the iconic First Friday. On the first Friday of every month, we release a new collection! Something special about the company is that we are able to do monthly releases, allowing us to surprise and excite our customers so often. The days leading up to First Friday include sneak peeks of the collection via social media, as well as “Live at Five,” the Thursday prior! Be sure to keep up with us on Instagram, @shopharveys, and Facebook to join the fun! When First Friday finally approaches, we open our doors at 8:00am PST for our customers to shop the collection in-store as well as online. Enjoy your new bag, have some coffee, and even get a chance to say hi to Melanie and Dana! It’s a treat for all.
